🌊 Cruising the Coast from Berrow Beach
Begin your journey at Berrow Beach, where the sea breeze and soft sands set the tone. As you cycle along the shoreline, look out to sea — Steep Holm island rises from the Bristol Channel like something from a storybook. The scenery shifts from golden dunes to rugged rock as you approach the Brean Down headland.
Just before you reach the Fort, you’ll find a gentle ramp leading off the beach. Here, you’ll spot a handy National Trust café and shop — perfect for a quick recharge or to pick up a map. The climb to the top of Brean Down can be tackled two ways: steep steps for the brave or a more gradual, bike-friendly path that still promises a satisfying workout.

🏰 Brean Down Fort: Echoes of the Empire
At the top, history greets you with open arms. Built between 1864 and 1871 to guard against Napoleon III’s ambitions, Brean Down Fort is a marvel of Victorian military might. It was later reactivated during WWII for experimental weapons testing. As you wander through its stone corridors and former barracks, you’ll feel the whispers of the past in every step.
From this elevated outpost, the views are jaw-dropping — gaze across the sea to Flat Holm, Steep Holm, and even South Wales on a clear day.

🌿 Wildlife & Wonder
Brean Down isn’t just about stone and steel — it’s a natural paradise. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it’s teeming with rare flora like white rock-rose and wild thyme. Keep your eyes peeled for kestrels, skylarks, and perhaps even a curious seal offshore.

● Sundowner Café Bar (bike hire base): Grab a coffee or bite before or after your ride
